Introduction

The role of the sales enablement specialist is one of the foundational positions within a sales enablement team.

Unlike the broader and more strategic role of a sales enablement manager, the specialist focuses on the hands-on, tactical execution of enablement initiatives.

As the discipline of sales enablement continues to mature, the specialist’s role is becoming increasingly important to the success of sales teams, particularly in organisations where the manager’s role is more strategic.

In our deep dive into the life of a sales enablement specialist, we highlighted how the responsibilities of enablement specialists can vary widely depending on the company size, industry, sales strategy and other factors.

However, we can say with certainty that they are are on the very front line of the discipline and their contributions are critical to bridge the gap between the sales enablement strategy and its execution.

Having been both a sales enablement manager and a sales enablement specialist, and having worked with various organisations to build out their enablement functions, I’ll leverage these experiences to provide a clear job description that captures the essence of the sales enablement specialist role (particularly for organisations with 150 to 1,000 employees).

This job description will include a job summary, duties and responsibilities, required experience, skills and attributes, and other desirable experience and skills.

Job summary

The primary duty of the sales enablement specialist is to support the execution of sales enablement programmes by developing, managing, and delivering training content, resources, and tools that empower sales teams to perform at their best.

This role involves close collaboration with the sales enablement manager and other stakeholders to ensure that the programmes align with the strategic goals of the organisation.

The sales enablement specialist will contribute by creating and maintaining sales enablement content, managing enablement tools, and providing direct support to sales representatives through training sessions, workshops, and one-on-one coaching.

The ideal candidate will be adept at translating strategic initiatives into actionable tasks that will directly impact sales and business outcomes.

This role requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work cross-functionally with sales, marketing, and product teams.

The sales enablement specialist plays a crucial role in ensuring that enablement programmes are executed effectively and that they deliver measurable business impact.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Developing and maintaining sales enablement content, including training content, playbooks, and other resources that support sales activities and influence sales performance.

  • Assisting in the design and delivery of sales training programmes, including onboarding, ongoing development, and specialised training for new product launches or sales methodologies.

  • Collaborating with the sales enablement manager to ensure that all training content aligns with the strategic goals of the sales enablement programmes.

  • Managing the day-to-day operation of sales enablement tools, including content management systems (CMS), learning management systems (LMS), and sales readiness platforms.

  • Conducting needs assessments to identify gaps in knowledge or skills within the sales team and proposing targeted training or other types of interventions to address these gaps.

  • Providing one-on-one coaching to sales representatives, focusing on specific skills development, such as product knowledge, objection handling, presentation skills, discovery skills, and other sales techniques.

  • Working with subject matter experts (SMEs) – especially from sales and marketing teams – to ensure that all sales enablement content is accurate, up-to-date, and aligned with the company’s sales strategies, product and service offerings.

  • Supporting the sales enablement manager in tracking and analysing the effectiveness of sales enablement programmes, including gathering feedback from sales teams and other stakeholders.

  • Assisting in the preparation of reports that demonstrate the ROI and business impact of sales enablement activities.

  • Continuously updating and improving sales enablement materials based on feedback, industry trends, and changes in the sales environment.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to translate complex ideas into clear, actionable instructions.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including sales, marketing, product, and sales operations.

  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.

  • Knowledge of instructional design principles and adult learning theories, with experience creating engaging and effective learning experiences.

  • Proficiency in using generative AI tools like ChatGPT or Gemini to support content creation and ideation.

Desirable experience and skills

  • Experience working in a quota-carrying sales role, such as an SDR, AE, or AM, providing firsthand understanding of the challenges faced by sales teams.

  • Experience coaching salespeople in both one-on-one and group settings.

  • Familiarity with video production tools and techniques for creating high-quality training videos and webinars.

  • Experience with sales data analysis and reporting across the sales process, particularly in the context of evaluating the effectiveness of sales enablement programmes.

Conclusion

The exact scope of a sales enablement specialist will vary by organisation, team size, and enablement maturity. In some companies, the role will focus heavily on content and training; in others, it may extend into coaching, technology, reporting, and programme management.

The job description above provides a practical starting point for defining the role or assessing the skills needed to move into it. From there, the responsibilities should reflect the problems the enablement function actually needs the specialist to solve.

For specialists themselves, the role can also provide a strong foundation for progressing into broader enablement positions as their experience, judgement, and ownership grow.
