As sales teams grow more complex and demands on individual sellers increase, the role of a sales coach has become central to driving performance improvement. Unlike a sales trainer, who focuses on delivering structured, formal training programmes, the sales coach works on an ongoing basis with individual sales representatives or small groups, helping them refine their skills and apply them in real-world sales encounters and situations.

The sales coach is essential for reinforcing what reps learn in formal training, providing continuous feedback, and helping them overcome obstacles they encounter in their daily work. While the trainer builds the foundation, the coach shapes the application of that foundation, ensuring sales reps are continuously developing their abilities in line with the company’s goals.

Drawing from my experience in sales enablement, leadership, and collaboration with sales coaches, I’ve developed this practical job description, which outlines the specific responsibilities and expectations for this role.

Job summary

The sales coach is responsible for providing ongoing, one-on-one or small group coaching to sales representatives at various experience levels. The primary goal is to develop specific sales skills, including cold calling, objection handling, discovery techniques, negotiation, closing strategies, and general effective communication with prospects and customers.

This role involves working closely with sales leadership, sales trainers, other sales enablement team members and individual sales reps to provide tailored coaching that aligns with the organisation’s sales strategy and methodologies. The sales coach will focus on monitoring and improving the practical application of sales techniques in day-to-day selling activities.

A successful sales coach is someone who can observe, assess, and provide actionable feedback to help sellers reach their full potential. This role demands strong interpersonal skills, deep knowledge of the sales process, and a commitment to helping individuals grow through targeted sales coaching interventions.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Provide personalised, ongoing coaching to sales professionals at all levels, from entry-level SDRs to senior AEs, focusing on improving key selling skills, including prospecting, qualification, objection handling, and closing.

  • Collaborate with sales leadership, sales trainers, and other sales enablement team members to align coaching efforts with broader sales strategies, methodologies (e.g., Challenger, SPIN, or MEDDPICC), and formal sales training programmes.

  • Conduct call reviews, role-playing sessions, and real-time feedback discussions to sharpen sales techniques and improve performance in live selling situations.

  • Design and lead coaching sessions that are focused on practical, scenario-based learning, helping reps apply knowledge from training to real-world contexts.

  • Monitor the progress of individual reps, providing tailored feedback and action plans for continuous improvement in specific areas such as discovery calls, demo delivery, or negotiation tactics.

  • Use performance data and metrics (e.g., call conversion rates, win rates, deal velocity) to identify areas for improvement and guide the focus of future coaching sessions.

  • Work with sales enablement teams to ensure that sales coaching efforts are supported by relevant sales enablement materials and tools, reinforcing consistent messaging and sales techniques across the team.

  • Create a culture of continuous improvement by encouraging reps to actively seek feedback, reflect on their performance, and make incremental changes to their approach.

  • Develop individualised coaching plans for high-potential reps or those struggling to meet performance expectations, with a focus on accelerating growth and closing skill gaps.

  • Regularly report on the progress and outcomes of coaching interventions to sales and enablement leadership, making recommendations for further development opportunities where needed.

Required experience, skills, and attributes

  • 5+ years of experience in a sales or coaching role, with a proven track record of helping salespeople improve performance through tailored coaching.

  • Extensive experience in a quota-carrying sales role (e.g., SDR, AE, AM), with a deep understanding of the sales process, including prospecting, qualifying, negotiating, and closing deals.

  • Strong knowledge of various sales methodologies (e.g., MEDDPICC, Challenger, SPIN) and the ability to coach reps on their application in complex sales cycles.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with individual sales reps and gain their trust.

  • Proven ability to provide constructive feedback in a way that motivates and empowers reps to improve, rather than discouraging them.

  • Strong observational skills, with the ability to identify specific areas where reps need improvement and develop actionable coaching plans to address those needs.

  • Proficiency with sales technology tools, including CRM systems, sales engagement tools, conversational intelligence platforms, and other types of sales coaching software.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple coaching relationships simultaneously, with a strong focus on results and performance improvement.

Desirable experience and skills

  • Experience in a fast-growing sales organisation where rapid change and high-performance standards are the norm.

  • Familiarity with AI role-playing and coaching platforms that allow for remote coaching and realistic scenario-based learning.

  • Experience with building individual development plans (IDPs) for sales reps, including setting measurable performance goals and tracking progress.

  • Knowledge of psychological principles related to motivation, behaviour change, and adult learning, which can enhance the coaching process.

  • Experience working with data and analytics to drive decisions about where to focus coaching efforts and how to measure the impact of coaching interventions.

Conclusion

The sales coach plays a pivotal role in helping sales teams reach their full potential by offering continuous, hands-on support tailored to the specific needs of each sales rep. While the sales trainer helps build foundational skills, the sales coach takes this further, focusing on sharpening these capabilities and ensuring their effective application in real-world scenarios (consider reviewing my sales training vs sales coaching article).

For sales leaders and recruiters, this job description serves as a practical guide to identifying candidates who not only understand the sales process but are also deeply committed to helping others succeed through personalised coaching. The ideal sales coach combines sales expertise, strong communication skills, and a passion for nurturing talent.

In my experience leading sales enablement, I know that effective sales managers are also great coaches, guiding their teams and providing valuable feedback. However, in organisations where more support is consider appropriate, having a dedicated sales coach makes sense. This role relieves some of the coaching burden from sales managers, ensuring that reps receive focused, ongoing development that is tailored to their specific challenges and goals.

As organisations grow, the need for specialised coaching increases, making the sales coach position an essential driver of long-term sales performance improvements.
